Vita

Herbert Schuch was born in Temesvar (Romania) in 1979, into a family with German and Hungarian ancestry. After early piano lessons in his home town with Prof. Maria Bodo, the family emigrated in 1988 to Germany, where he has lived ever since. The young Herbert Schuch continued his musical studies with Kurt Hantsch and then with Prof. Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In the recent past Herbert Schuch has been particularly influenced by his encounters and work with Alfred Brendel.
He attracted international attention when within a single year, he won three important piano competitions - the Casagrande competition, the London International Piano Competition and the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna.

Since then he has worked with such orchestras as the hr Symphony Orchestra, the German Radio Philharmonic of Saarbrücken/Kaiserslautern, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Mozart Players, the Camerata Salzburg, the RSO of Vienna, the State Philharmonic of the Rhineland Palatinate and the Orchestre National de Lyon, and makes regular guest appearances at festivals such as the Rheingau Music Festival, the Bad Kissingen Summer Festival and the Ruhr Piano Festival.

His interest in chamber music, stimulated by his childhood training on the violin, is something he shares with such musicians as Adrian Brendel, Mirijam Contzen, Veronika Eberle, Julia Fischer, Marie-Elisabeth Hecker, Sebastian Klinger, Alina Pogostkin and Martin Spangenberg.

The 2009/2010 season will see Herbert Schuch playing with the Orchestre National de Lille, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the Berne Symphony Orchestra and the State Philharmonic of the Rhineland Palatinate, with whom he will be performing the five Beethoven piano concertos. Under the direction of Jun Märkl, he will be undertaking a concert tour of seven German cities with the MDR Symphony Orchestra.

Herbert Schuch is the 2010/11 "artist in residence" in Salzburg , where he will be playing Korngold's piano concertos in the Festspielhaus with the Brussels Philharmonic under Michel Tabachnik, Schumann with the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra under Andrey Boreyko and Ullmann with the Konzerthaus Orchestra of Berlin under Lothar Zagrosek. In that season, he will also be giving his debut recitals in the Vienna Konzerthaus, at the Stuttgart Music Festival, in the Düsseldorf Tonhalle and the Cologne Philharmonie.

His debut CD appeared on the OehmsClassics label in 2005 and was Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine. That disc was followed by two further highly acclaimed recital CDs on the Munich-based label. There is a release planned for this year, a CD entitled "Sehnsuchtswalzer" (waltzes of yearning) with pieces by Schumann and others.

Alongside his concert work, Herbert Schuch has been active for some time in the "Rhapsody in School" organization founded by Lars Vogt, which is committed to bringing classical music into schools.
